A treasure trove of marine resources—
The waters of the Sanriku Coast and
the Oshika Peninsula

map

A marine marvel created by
overlapping ocean currents and a ria coastline

The waters off the Sanriku Coast are recognized as one of the world’s three greatest fishing grounds, due to the perfect coming together of an Oyashio (cold current) and Kuroshio (warm current). The cold current brings fish such as salmon, saury and cod, while the warmer current brings the likes of mackerel, bonito and tuna.

The Oshika Peninsula, situated at the southern tip of the Sanriku Coast, features a number of intricate inlets along the ria coast and forests that have grown right up to the ocean itself. This unique natural environment creates an ideal habitat for all kinds of marine creatures, as the ocean is fed by nutrients from both the forest and the sea. Vast bodies of plankton are brought in by the currents to combine with nutrients stirred up from the seabed due to the temperature differences of the two currents.

Marudai Naganuma’s production base is located at the center of this amazing treasure trove of marine resources. In this, our place of establishment and beloved home, we have forged a strong relationship with the local fisheries industry and grown together with them through efforts to protect and cultivate our natural environment.

Here, we can harvest various kinds of migratory fish off the Sanriku Coast and those collected along the rocky shores of the Oshika Peninsula such as oysters, mekabu and hoya (sea squirts). To deliver seafood of the freshest and premium taste, we have been making continuous efforts in the enhancement of processing technologies and production capacity, as well as the tightening of hygiene management and the streamlining of our distribution system.

Our motivation behind all these efforts comes from our passion to deliver to others the treasures we have been blessed with and taken from the sea around our home.
