Creating a new kind of
food culture
by responding to the
ever-changing
needs of the times

Marudai Naganuma was founded in 1965 as a seafood processing business, handling oyster aquaculture, manufacturing and sales directly from the farm.

Although this sales model was not at all common at the time, we had decided on a clear vision that focused on targeting Tokyo, the largest market in Japan. In 1977, we established a sales office in Tokyo to become a seafood manufacturing and trading corporation with a dual business base.

Since our foundation in the 1960s, Japan’s food culture has undergone a drastic transformation. This is due to changes in local environments such as an evolution in distribution systems and processing technologies, diversification of the food industry and a Westernization of the population’s diets. The seafood industry has also seen remarkable changes, like a decline in domestic catch volumes and intensified competition for seafood imports driven by soaring demand in the international market.

Recently, people’s perception of food safety has also had a great influence on the food industry. One of the reasons can be attributed to the effects of the country’s major disasters, including the Great East Japan Earthquake, which have heightened concerns over food safety among people across the nation.

Amid such changes, our company has always tried to be sensitive to new market trends. Therefore, we have taken on many new challenges, including the development of new processing technologies and delivery systems, as well as the creation of new products. Currently, our key products are oysters and mekabu (the part above the root of wakame seaweed) along with other kinds of seafood from the Sanriku region.

Despite the coastal area of the Oshika Peninsula being severely affected by the tsunami in 2011, the region has since recovered its rich and beautiful seas and coastal areas thanks to the collective efforts of local communities. In 2017, we built a new factory with cutting-edge facilities to fortify our production capacity.

Now, over half a century since our founding, Marudai Naganuma will remain committed to creating a new food culture by building on our past experience and achievements.

We hope to invest in the growth of the forest and
also protect the ocean toward a brighter future

Oshika Peninsula’s oysters and mekabu have an amazing natural flavor because they grow in waters surrounded by a number of intricate inlets that are enriched with abundant nutrients from the land and sea. With a brighter future in mind, one of the efforts we are making to protect such an amazing environment is to plant trees in the forest in collaboration with a local fisheries cooperative and a consumers’ cooperative in Tokyo. Although this project had to be suspended due to the 2011 earthquake, work has now resumed along with the recovery of local regions. We hope to continue with our efforts as long as possible through the love we share for our beautiful home.
